Notes for HANNAH ADELINE HOUSEMAN:

A variety of spellings of names that differ are:  Hanna instead of Hannah, Adiline or Adeline or Adilyne and Houseman may have been spelled Housman, and is spelled Howesman in England.

Taken from the Scarborough Mercury 1902 Newspaper, Scarborough, England.

An interesting East Yorkshire couple in the village of Saxton, near Scarborough is the home of a very interesting couple Mr. & Mrs. Matthew Houseman who have recently celebrated completion of over sixty years of married life, they were married at Thortondale on December 14, 1841 and they have twelve children of whom seven are living.  They have 41 grandchildren and 57 great grandchildren.  Mr. Houseman was born at Brompton on January 28, 1819 and will be 83 years of age next Wednesday.  His father was 82 years of age when he died in America, having emigrated from Brompton.

Mrs. Houseman is also an Octogenarian but she is an invalid, on the other hand, Matt is said to be seen at Scarborough on Market Days with a basket hanging on each arm and carrying four or five rabbits in his hands, as hale and hardy as many men twenty years younger.  In his younger days Mr. Houseman was a sheppard but for 35 years he has lived in a cottage at Saxton and during all this time he has been in the habit of killing and dressing pigs and delivering them in spite of inclement weather and troublesome cough.  He told a press representative that he has had little illness during his long life and he can still see the smallest print without the aid of glasses.

Mr. Houseman's Mothers name (Maiden Name) was Bean from Brompton, England

Mrs. Houseman's Mothers (Maiden Name was Jane King.  Father was Robert King from Wilton Yorkshire, England.

A note from Carol Frederickson:

Mom said Grandpa Ward was a minister in England.

One time, I asked her how Robert Ward and Pearl Dennis met.  Mom said the Ward's used to go between Blooming Prairie, Minnesota and northern Minnesota.  They got tired of one place so they would take off for the other place and pretty soon sometimes years passed and they'd be back.

My Grandma, Pearl Dennis Ward, used to take in roomers for extra money.  Uncle Floyd stayed with them.

Notes for ORLIE ADELLA(TWIN) WARD:

Orlie has an identical twin--Olive Mabel Ward

        Memoir from Karen, Orlie's granddaughter:

Grandma was one of the hardest working women I ever knew.

She had eleven children and I really don't know how many grandchildren and great grandchildren.  With grandma there was always room for one more to love.  She did not have all the modern amenities but she was a proud woman and always made the best of what she had.

When our house burned to the ground and I lost two sisters in that fire.....I was to be 10 years old in less than a month.  One of my family members asked me to go to St. Paul to be with Diane while Mom and Dad were in the hospital.  Diane was the baby....she was only 6 months old at the time.

Aunt Bernice was coming to take Diane home with her.  I said no because I needed to be with grandma.  She was a stable person in my life and that is where the rest of us 5 girls went to stay.  She lived 2 miles off Highway 65 south of Jacobson.  It was April and the roads were terribly muddy.  My uncles brought a tractor and trailer out to the highway to bring us home with them.  Her farm was among hills, open fields and many, many rocks.  Today, I am right at home where I live....our farm is among hills, open fields and many, many rocks.....a lot like Grandpa and Grandma Thompson's land area.

There was one day when I went to visit Grandma when she was in the chicken yard.  She had a chicken by it's head, above her head swinging it in circles.  She was having chicken for supper and she did not tolerate chickens that laid their eggs in the weeds.  When she caught them, they were a meal for her.

When summer came, Grandma had a large garden if she needed it or if someone else would share it with her.  There were cucumbers by the tubs full.  It was a big day of pickling when they were ready.  My mother, Aunt Nyla, and Aunt Vi would go to Grandma's to make pickles....garlic dill pickles were the big task....many, many quarts of them.  They were so good!

Grandma had an ice-box for a refrigerator.  Every winter, the men would get together to cut large ice chunks from the lake, haul them to the ice-house at Grandpa and Grandma's.  The ice chunks were stored in sawdust in a building.   The ice lasted most of the summer and Grandma used it in the ice-box to keep things cold.

Grandma sold eggs from her chickens.  She had cows until she was unable to keep them.  From them she separated the milk and sent the cream to the creamery for money.  Grandpa died when the youngest child was 7 years old, leaving Grandma a few kids to raise on her own.  She had a tough time but I do not recall her complaining.

When I was to graduate from high school, my Mom and Dad were so broke that I was not going to have graduation pictures, graduation announcements, or a new outfit for baccaulareate and graduation exercises.   But Grandma gave Mom the money for me to get my pictures and announcements.   I didn't think I needed a new outfit for graduation because we would be wearing a gown anyway.  But baccaulareate was something else....what was I going to wear?  Grandma tried to give Mom money for an outfit for me but she refused to take it.   So Grandma went to town and bought   a navy blue suit for me.   I only hope Grandma  knew how much I loved her and appreciated everything she did for me.....during my childhood and later in my married life.   She was one of the most unselfish people I have ever known and am glad she was my grandmother.

Her funeral:  Visitation was at Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids, Minnesota on Monday, June 5, 1967.  Services were at Carmel Lutheran Church in  Ball Bluff, Minnesota on Tuesday, June 6, 1967 at 3 p.m. with Rev. Ralph Chamberlain officiating.

Notes for RICHARD THOMPSON:

Richard is the son of Paul Thompson and Anna Siewertsen.[Thompson.FTW]

        A memoir from Karen:

Richard, my grandpa, was a very special person in my life.  He died when I was only 6 years old, I was just getting ready to go into first grade.  He was one person in my life that made me feel loved and worthwhile, even at the young age I was.  I remember going with him when he went to get the cows for their evening milking.  We walked and walked.  At times he would sit down on a log to talk to me and he said to rest.  On one of these walks, he saw a Granddaddy Long Legs spider.  He picked it and let it run from one of his hands to the other....I was fascinated with this.  The whole time he was talking to me about the spider.  He said if I was ever lost and am alone, to look around for one of these Granddaddy Long Legs, it could not be any other kind.  He said to hold it like he was, then let it down and it would lead me home.  Oh, how I love that memory.

Other times, he would load me up in his wagon and take me for a ride with him to get water.  They did not have a well for water on their farm and had to drive to another farm to get water.  When we got there, the water had to be pulled up with a bucket, no pumps there.  He always worried if I was getting cold in the wintertime.  I don't remember being cold, only his concern for my welfare.

Grandpa insisted on being the one to take me to the beauty salon for the first time for a permanent.  He wanted to do it before I started school.  One day, Grandpa and Grandma picked me up, took me to Grand Rapids to get my permanent.  I cried because the curlers were too tight and pulled my hair, and the dryers were too hot.  Grandpa kept reassuring me that it wouldn't take long and I would be prettier than before.  When it was all done, he took me shopping because I had to have a new hat for my new hairdo.

I lost Grandpa that summer shortly after that day when he died from a heart attack.

Notes for LAWRENCE ALTON WARD:

Lawrence shot himself to death in his yard five days after his 70th birthday.  He often said         he wouldn't live to be past 70 years old.  For me, his niece, Karen, Uncle Lawrence was a

nice man to spend time with.  He whistled almost any time and all of us children loved to

listen whenever he was whistling.  He would read books to us or just hold us on his lap for

his attention.  I spent many of my summers visiting at Uncle Lawrence and Aunt Luellas home.

I do not recall them having any modern facilities at all.  I remember vividly the old school house                they lived in out on what we called "Old 65".  The rooms were divided by furniture so there

was little privacy.  If anyone complained about anything, I do not recall it.  When they moved

from there, they moved into "Buchholz Place".  This was closer to Highway 65, in fact, it was    within walking distance to the highway and to the river.  This place had a big house with                          many rooms...a lot of beautiful woodwork...still no modern facilities.  It was in this house I           remember Aunt Luella making pickled beets and a lot of other canned vegetables.  Uncle

Lawrence worked in the mines and I don't remember him being home very much.  The

family had a tough life as far as making ends meet.

Richard used to sing while he was milking the cows.  His favorite song to sing was "When It's Springtime in the Rockies".

The Prevost's bought land north of Cloquet.  At the time there was a hotel on Dunlap Island that was being torn down.  Richard salvaged the lumber to build their house.

Most of Richard's working career, he was employed at Northwest Paper in Cloquet, Minnesota.

Together for many years this family picked blueberries and was generous to the families giving dark blue purple bottles of berries at Christmastime.

When Richard drowned in the Little Fork River in Big Falls, Minnesota, so did Uncle Sam Prevost.  Richard's 2 sons, were also with them.  Tom held on to some brush in the river while Dick stayed with the boat.  They both managed to get to shore to get help.

30.  CRYSTAL ANNA4 THOMPSON (ORLIE ADELLA(TWIN)3 WARD, GEORGE2, ROBERT1)45 was born 14 Dec 1921 in Jacobson, Aitkin County, Minnesota46,47, and died 06 Aug 1993 in Rush City, Chisago County, Minnesota, USA48,49.  She married LEONARD MELVIN LINDMAN49 26 Dec 1941 in First English Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids, Itasca County, Minnesota.  He was born 11 Sep 1921 in Jacobson, Aitkin County, Minnesota49, and died 06 Dec 1997 in Cambridge, Isanti County, Minnesota.

Notes for CRYSTAL ANNA THOMPSON:

Crystal worked at the State Hospital until she had to retire due to her health.

Crystal and her family picked the many kinds of berries that were in season for jellies, jam, sauces: strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, high-bush cranberries, chokecherries, pincherries.  They always had a large garden.

She never had a driver's license.  When Leonard had to be hospitalized in Hibbing for polio, she packed all the children into the car and risked the chance of a ticket to make the trip up there to see him.

Crystal had a beautiful voice.  She was seldom heard singing.  When there was a new baby in the house, she could be heard singing while she rocked the baby.  She sang when the others were outside at play.  The children caught on to this and would sneak to listen under the windows.

She was a calm, joyful woman.  She was proud of and had a tremendous love for her children.  She saw the BEST in everyone.  No matter how bad something was, Crystal would try to find some good that would come out of it.

Crystal was dreadfully afraid of water.  She told the family on several occasions that she believed that when she died, Betty Ann and Virginia (the 2 daughters she lost in the house fire in 1952) would come across the water to meet her and she would leave with them.[Thompson.FTW]

The following are memories from Karen, Crystal's oldest child:

Crystal was born and grew up in northern Minnesota in the Jacobson area.  She attended Cornish School.  Crystal and Leonard lived for a few years in Hill City, MN before moving ot Rush City, MN. in 1967.  They opened their home to foster boys while raising their own family.

Crystal always had a large garden and she made good use of the produce taken from it.  Peas, beans, corn, and pickles were canned each year.  The older girls had to clean at least one row in the garden each day before they were free for the day to play or swim.  The girls also had to help with the work around the house.  Our water was carried from a pump outside in the yard.  On laundry day, the girls carried the water.  When laundry was finished, the wash water had to be carried out and Crystal wanted it put on her rose bushes and peonies.  She said it kept the worms and bugs away.

Every spring, when all the plants, grass, trees and everything came to life, things started happening with our family activities for the summer.  As soon as the dandelions and pig weeds started to grow, we picked them for eating.  When the tender dandelion leaves were too large and tough for eating, we picked the blossoms by the bucket so Mom could make wine.  Springtime also meant tapping the maple trees and gathering the sap for maple syrup.  It took many gallons of sap to make the syrup but it was so good.

When berries became ripe in late summer, the entire family would pack up early in the morning and did not return home until evening.  They would work late into the night sometimes cleaning the berries so Crystal would be prepared for canning them the next day.  They picked strawberries, blueberries, currants, raspberries, chokecherries, pincherries, high bush cranberries and blackberries.  Jams and jellies were made from the juice as well as a quarts of syrup.  Many, many quarts of jellies, jams, sauce, juice and syrup were put away when the berries were available.

I remember one day in the 1950s when a Barn Owl got into our chicken pen.  Mom told Dad about it and he shot it.  He brought it in the house in a box and set the box on Mom's wringer washing machine.  He called the taxidermist in Grand Rapids cause he wanted it mounted.  But Dad had to work the next day so he talked Mom into taking it to Grand Rapids for him.  Mom did not have a driver's license and doing something like this, scared her...she was always afraid of getting picked up.  The next morning, Mom got up first and went into the kitchen to get breakfast for Dad.  The owl was sitting on the top of her wringer washer.  It was not dead!!  Dad hit it in the head with something, put it in the box again and placed the box in the trunk of the car.  When we got to the taxidermy, Mom went in and asked him to get the owl out of the trunk.  She was not taking any chances of it being alive and the taxidermist didn't think it would be either.  But when the taxidermist opened the trunk, the owl was sitting up looking at him.  What a memorable experience!  When Dad got that owl back, us girls used to tease all the kids that came to visit that it was really alive.  There was one family that used to come to stay overnight and they had mostly boys.  Dad or Mom had to remove the owl from the living room where they slept because we had scared them of it.

Mom was a bit superstitious!  Dad used to tease her a lot about it.  On one occasion, she had him pick up a wedding gift on his way home from work one day.  He picked up knives.  She was so upset, she cried and said she could not give knives for a wedding present because it would bring bad luck to the couple.  Then someone told her to put a new penny on each knife and it would be okay so that is what she did.  If she saw any of us step over a broom, we had to step back over it and pick it up.  Some days, we would spend lots of time looking for a four-leaf clover because she wanted one and she would always help us look.  Black cats, Mom didn't like black cats at all.....especially if we saw one on the road.  We never walked under a ladder because of Mom's fears.  It was easier to walk around one than to retrace our steps and then go around.  She would not step on a crack on a sidewalk and encouraged us not to either.  She was always fearful of breaking a mirror....she could not risk 7 years bad luck.

Mom made a quilt for each one of her children before she died and for most of her grandchildren.  I seldom use the quilt she made me....but I do on special occasions, such as reunions and sometimes at Christmas.  It is beautiful and I treasure having it.

My memories of living on the farm, the Lindman Homestead, are good.  We didn't have a lot of toys and things like that but we were creative and enjoyed ourselves.  A creek ran through our place and us girls and the neighbor kids would come over and we would spend a lot of time in the creek.

We made up games when a tree would fall down in the pasture and would play on the tree until all the branches were gone.  The 'puffballs' that were prevalent in the cow pastures were used as contests...just to see who could find the most and smash them to see the cloud of dust come from them.  It was on this farm too that tragedy was to strike:  the house fire that trapped two of the girls and they burned to death.  Mom was in the hospital 2 weeks because of a near nervous breakdown and she had a miscarriage that night.  Dad was in the hospital 2 weeks because he was burned to the bone in his hands and feet trying to get the girls out.  The baby, Diane, went to St. Paul to stay with Aunt Bernice and the rest of us stayed with Grandma Thompson until Mom and Dad got home.

Mom was afraid of water.  She was terrified every time we went down to the lake to swim.  I think she got a bit used to it trusting that we would be careful.  Us older girls taught ourselves how to swim when we lived between Big and Little Ball Bluff Lakes.  Living there, it offered us fishing, swimming, skiing, sledding and skating.  Our landlord was a nightmare for our Mom though.  He was always drunk and when Dad was gone, he would come to our house and make passes at her.  She was in tears over it so much of the time.  We lived there six years when we were evicted.  By this time, Dad had had enough and we moved over by the gravel pit on Highway 200.  Mom and Dad fell into very difficult financial times at this time and was forced into bankruptcy.  It took many years after that before life straightened out for them.  In fact, when Dad got the job at Cambridge it was like a miracle for them.

Mom worked at the Cambridge State Hospital in the laundry room until her health couldn't take it any longer.  She had to give it up.

We were never a hugging, "I Love You" kind of family until Mom and Dad got into their older years.  Love was never questioned because the physical parts did not exist, and respect and trust for each other was evident and expected.

Notes for NYLA ZADEL THOMPSON:

[Thompson.FTW]

Aunt Nyla is a very strong, independent woman who has been willing to be of help to any one she knows.  I, Karen, recall a time in the 1960s when I was sewing dresses and shirts by hand for my children.  Aunt Nyla came to visit and saw I was sewing by hand because I did not have a sewing machine.  The following week she came for another visit but this time she brought   a White Treadle Sewing Machine and gave it to me.  She said it wasn't an electric one but it worked and she wanted me to have it.  I used this machine for several years until I got an electric one.  For several years, it was exposed to the weather and the veneer separated, the drawers on the right came off, it looked like it should be trashed?  I brought it home saddened by it's condition and wanted to restore it.  With the help of a neighbor, who found a machine very similar to it in her father's burning pile.  She dug it out and brought it to me.  I peeled pieces of veneer off that one and matched them to mine and glued them on.  My husband used pieces of the drawer slides to rebuild that part.  I ordered a new leather belt and got that put on.  The machine works but the tensions on it are not set correctly;  but the machine is back looking like I wanted it to....like when Aunt Nyla gave it to me so long ago.  It is a great piece of memorbilia that I treasure.  She is one of those women one is fortunate to have known.

There have been many occasions, when Aunt Nyla was finished with her mail route,  she would take neighbors to town shopping.    Uncle Melvin used to say, "She loves the mail route more than she does me."   She baked goods to give to neighbors.

Aunt Nyla used to do a lot of canning and making home brew and wine.

2004:  Nyla was taking the mail boxes from her car when the wind blew the door shut on her foot.  She had to have ? toes removed because poor circulation caused them to turn black.  She had to have artieries stripped soon after because of blockage.  She turned 78 years old on December 28th, 2004 and she was back driving the mail route in Jacobson.
