11 Sep 1921 in Jacobson, Aitkin County, Minnesota, and died 03 Dec 1997 in
Cambridge, Isanti County, Minnesota3. He married CRYSTAL ANNA THOMPSON 26 Dec
1941 in Grand Rapids, Itasca County, Minnesota, daughter of RICHARD THOMPSON and ORLIE WARD. She was born 14 Dec 1921 in Jacobson, Aitkin
County, Minnesota, and died 06 Aug 1993 in Rush City, Chisago County,
Minnesota.
Notes for LEONARD MELVIN SR LINDMAN:
Leonard worked in logging
camps in Northern Minnesota. He worked
as an over the road truck driver. He was
an employee of the Butler Mines/ Hanna Mining Company in Hibbing, Minnesota on
the Iron Range in Minnesota. In 1950,
Leonard broke his back when the Euclid he was driving went down 80 feet in an
iron ore mine pit. He spent nearly six
months in the hospital in Duluth following this accident. Crystal moved the family from Pengilly to
Proctor to stay with Leonard's parents to be near him. The family lived in town near the railroad
tracks....the snow was always black with coal dust. Crystal hated hanging clothes on the line
because of the dust. At this time, Karen
was in the 2nd grade and Carmen was in the 1st grade. The family moved back to the farm in Jacobson
when Leonard got out of the hospital.
Tragedy soon struck again, on April 9, 1952, their home caught on fire
from a spark from the wood stove when it went up the chimney. Built up creosote
in the chimney is what fueled the fire. Two of Leonard and Crystal's 8
daughters did not get out and burned to death.
Leonard had burns to the bone in his hands and feet from trying to get
to them. When he knew he could not, he
crawled into the pig pen in the garage, hugged the sow and cried. Both Leonard and Crystal were in Grand Rapids
hospital for 2 weeks. While Leonard was
still recovering from the burns, he was knocked down by a cow he was unloading
from a truck. He was knocked
unconscious, was treated and released from Grand Rapids hospital with cuts and
lacerations to the head and face. After
the fire, Leonard could not imagine ever wanting to live back on the home place
and sold it. After the grieving passed,
he tried to buy it back but the new owners refused. He was heart broken.
In 1966, Leonard was
employed by the State of Minnesota working as a Laundry Truck driver for the
Cambridge State Hospital: He made 2 runs per day: one to Moose Lake and the
other to Anoka. He drove school bus for
the Pine City School District. About one
year after getting the job in Cambridge, the family moved to Rush City,
Minnesota where they purchased a home there.
The family would pick all
kinds of berries for sauce and jelly/jam.
They would leave their home early in the morning and stay in the
blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, blackberry patches until they had all their
containers full. It would be an ALL day
adventure. When they all got home,
everyone sat around the kitchen table and cleaned until the berries were ready
to can. Not one of the children ever
asked what they were going to get paid nor did they ever refuse to help. It was all a part of being 'family'. A large garden was planted every year....and
with this, the girls were expected to clean/weed one row a day to keep the
weeds in check. The ladies would get
together at Grandma Thompsons a couple days in the summer to help her make her
fabulous garlic dill pickles. Not one
complaint was heard when this was done either.
They knew that there would be "no time for play" if there was
a complaint or refusal. 'Being
bored" was not something the family knew about....there was always
something to do.
Leonard wired the farm
house for a pump so we did not have to haul water from the barn....this was
done the fall before the fire. Bathroom
duties were not in the house....they were in an outhouse, out behind the garage. We looked forward to the time when Mom would
buy peaches, pears and apricots by the lug.
Not only were they good in the winter but Mom saved the paper they were
packed in for "toilet paper".
The papers were rationed out to all of us. When they were gone, it was back to the
Sears, Roebuck catalog. We did not get a
television set until 1956.
When coffee mugs came out,
Dad was very disappointed....he liked his coffee from a cup and saucer. He poured the hot coffee into the saucer and
drank from that.
Holidays were always filled
with family activities: Christmas was
without question to be spent at
Crystal's family farm with
lots of food and sledding. Family's got
together at Easter for Easter Egg hunts, Thanksgiving was a day of blessings
with family, the 4th of July was spent at a lake with family, at festivals,
family visits and fireworks.
This is a brief summary of
Leonard and his family. It would take
too much space for this part of the history book to go into more detail here.

Lindman, daughter of Leonard's.

32. LUELLA ARETTA5 LINDMAN (MINNIE AMELIA4 WALLIN, HAROLD 'HANS'3, ERICK ERICKSON2, ERICK1 ERICKSON) was born
19 Jan 1923 in Jacobson, Aitkin County, Minnesota. She married (1) LAWRENCE ALTON WARD. He was born 15 Jun 1905, and died 15 Jun 1975
in McGregor, Aitkin County, Minnesota6. She married (2) CLIFFORD BORDWELL.
Notes for LUELLA ARETTA LINDMAN:
A memoir from Karen Lindman Klennert, Luella's niece and
Lawrence's great-niece:
During my school years, I looked forward to summers because I
knew I could go stay for a while
at their home. Aunt Luella never thought
it an imposition for me to stay there.
Any way
she never acted like I would be in her way. Aunt Luella was my father's sister and she married my
mother's Uncle Lawrence (grandma Thompson's brother).
I remember them living in an old school house, near a sink
hole. Since it was a one-room schoolhouse, they had
to divide rooms using dressers and any other furniture they had.
There was not a lot of privacy for any of them and I don't
know that it affected any of them.
A pump for water was just out the door and all the water had
to be carried.
One of our favorite things to do was climb trees...not the
safest thing but did we think of safety at the
time?...no...because our goal was to see who could climb the highest. I ripped
a few pair of pants doing that
and I was most always told Mom would be upset.
But I think Mom
sort of expected me to do that any way.
Dad 'always' warned us of the sink hole....to stay away from
it and we were afraid enough of
it that we were not tempted to go there.
I have wondered over the years though, why he would risk driving over the road that
ran through it? I know he always stopped before starting to cross and
look it over, and if he thought it was okay, he would go. And when we reached the other side, he would
sigh. I do not recall him ever turning
back thinking it was
unsafe to cross. There were
neighbors/friends on the other side that Dad liked to
stop to visit for a few minutes while we were in the
neighborhood.
I remember the family moving to the Buchholz place. It was kind of thrilling for them since it had a farm house on it with
an upstairs so the kids had a 'bedroom'.
It had a basement/cellar
where Aunt Luella could store her canning. One of my favorite times of the year to visit
was fall time when Aunt Luella was
taking produce out of the garden. Her
beet pickles were an envy
to many including me. I loved the smell
of them as well as the taste of them. I
still say, "Noboby can make beet
pickles like Aunt Luella." I have
her recipe and make them when I have
beets but they aren't the same.
Nonetheless, I think of Aunt Luella every time I eat beet
pickles.
Staying at Aunt Luella's was a memorable, comfortable place
to visit and I am glad I had the
opportunity to be one to spend time with her.

A memoir from Karen: Living in Jacobson as a child was an
experience! The Swedes lived on the East
side of the Mississippi River and the Finnish people lived on the west side of
the river. Shopping at the Co-op store
showed the separation of the two cultures as well. The Finns would rush to a corner of the store
and huddle there when the Swedes came in to shop. In the year 2000, I met one of the Finns at
an auction sale that had lived there at
that time. He came to talk to me because
he thought he recognized me. Then we
talked about the "good old days".
He said, "You know you had to live there at the time to know that
this actually did happen. This is
great." I don't recall my family as
being a 'hugging' 'I love you' type of family.
But we all knew we were loved and cared for and didn't question it. Christmas and the 4th of July were 2 holidays
that were sure to be shared with extended family. We got to see the Indian PowWows and visit
with more relatives. Seldom did we miss
the Fireworks in town! Visiting was
important when I was a child--now everyone is so busy that time runs out for
many of us before we visit. Then we grab
a few minutes at a funeral. The creek
that ran through the Lindman farm pasture was a wonderful place to play, mostly
to wade in or balance ourselves walking across a fallen tree. It was all simple and so uncomplicated. It took no technology to be creative and have
fun! There was plenty of socialization.
Ray and Karen met and dated
while going to High School in Hill City.
He stopped to see her in March, 1992 in Floodwood. Both of their marriages were in trouble and
divorce was certain for both. They
married in August, 1993 and now live in Swatara, Aitkin County, Minnesota
(2005). Ray worked at Blandin Paper
Company until his retirement in 2002.
They share their home with 3 furry friends; Dude, Dayna, and Taz. They love their children/grandchildren,
family and friends, and love their visits, holidays, nature, and family
reunions.

Minnesota21, and died 23 Nov 2000 in Henriette, Pine County,
Pokegama Township, Minnesota22. He married KIMBERLY POTTER 06 Oct
1978. She was born 01 Jan 1961 in Ramsey
County, Minnesota.
Notes for RICHARD FRED LINDMAN:
Anyone who knew Richard knew him as a "Simple
Man". He was satisfied with little
and would make do with little. He lived
simple and expected no more than what he had.
He wasn't much interested in material things, just love, happiness,
Harley Davidson friends, his family and his art. He would buy the cheapest and simplest of
artist tools and make extravagant pieces of art. He could have made a fortune with his art and
music talents. On one occasion, he did a
painting for someone. When he was
finished, he told the fellow what he wanted for it. (And Rick was always on the cheap side for
any of his art work). The guy told him
it was too much and didn't take it. Rick
got so angry, he took it home and burned it.
He talked about this a lot and was reluctant ever after to make any art
work to sell. Another time, he sold his art to someone and he in turn
sold it at a much higher price. When
Rick found out, he said, "Nobody is going to make money on my
talents". Instead of raising his
price, he quit making art to sell. After
these unhappy events regarding his art, he started tattooing. And he tattooed on his own body as well as
others. His happiest of times were spent
with his 2 boys, Casey and Dylan. Casey
and Rick did a lot of 'jamming' together.
They both had a great love for music.
He loved both of the boys dearly.
Rick loved nature and loved to be around non-judgmental people. All he ever asked of for himself from others
was to be allowed to be himself. He was
told by a Judge that he needed to go for treatment for his alcohol
problem. He told the Judge it was a waste
of time and money. He told him he loved
beer and planned to have a beer as soon as he got out of jail. He served his time in jail and continued to
have his beer when he got out. In a
discussion with his sister, Karen, he told her he wanted to go visit her but
she would have to have beer for him.
That if she didn't, she was violating his civil rights. She told him she would have his beer for him
and he was free to drink it as long as he did not drive. That if he got behind the wheel of a vehicle,
he was violating her and everyone elses civil rights. He agreed with her. For several months up to his death, she would
drive from her home in Swatara to pick him up south of Mora, where he lived, to
bring him home with her for the weekend.
She would take him back home when the weekend was over.
Interests: Richard was a Naturalist (preferred to be
nude whenever possible).
He loved music and played guitar and harmonica. He was a good entertainer around family campfires.
The young children would gather around to have him teach them harmonica
or to listen to him play
and sing. He always dreamed of recording
his own songs. He had the opportunity to play with the band
'Steppenwolf' and was very proud of that.
He also had the opportunity
to be on "The Gong Show" and won.
He could speak five languages 'enough to get by'.
He was on the wrestling team in high school.
Medical: Richard was in a car accident in 1976, a head
injury resulted. Six years later, 1981,
he had to have a tumor
removed from his brain as a result of that accident. He was experiencing double vision and severe headaches. The doctors were unable to remove all the
tumor. He was told that if he continued to drink alcohol, the tumor would
return. Richard was an alcoholic and was dependent on it.
Richard lived as a homeless person for several months at a
time. The family was constantly
concerned about where he was and how he was. He referred to himself as 'The Dumpster King'. Sooner or later his sister, Karen, or
brother, Gene, would get a call from him.
One
time of the year he would call would be Christmas if he was
gone.
Money meant little to Richard--he only needed enough to live
day to day.
Richard was killed in a car accident on Thanksgiving Day in
2000. He was a passenger in the vehicle
that was hit. The driver of the truck
said his brakes failed and he was unable to stop at a Stop Sign. An oncoming car hit the truck and spun around
hitting the side of the car Rick was on.
The impact knocked the cab of the truck off its frame. A Memorial was held in the Swanson Funeral
Chapel in Pine City on Monday, November 27, 2000, and his funeral held on
Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at the Swanson Funeral Chapel. He was cremated and interment was in Rush
City. He was buried next to his
daughter, Melissa. He was planning on
getting married to Kim Johnson in the future at the time of his death. Kim and Rick's explanation of their upcoming
marriage was--"Not only do we love each other, but we are too crazy for
anyone else so we might as well stay together." They both felt they were the "unique
couple."
