Descendants of Christian 'Carsten' Thomsen

Generation No. 1

1.  CHRISTIAN 'CARSTEN'1 THOMSEN was born 14 Apr 1812 in Almdorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and died 06 Jul 1891 in Almdorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.  He married DOROTHEA 'DOLLY' DETHLEFSEN.  She was born 21 Dec 1810 in Almdorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and died 03 Apr 1895 in Almdorf, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Notes for CHRISTIAN 'CARSTEN' THOMSEN:

Carsten Thomsen lived in the Borsbüll from 1860-1890.

Carsten Thomsen lived in "Barakken" which were wooden homes built for men who worked on the dike and the road.

Peter Christian and Carsten lived in the same house from 1870-1875

The house burned down in 1899, all the other houses are still standing today and Magnus, a self-proclaimed archivist of Borsbüll, has pictures of all of them.

Borsbüll has been a part of Brecklum since the middle 1930's.  Borsbüll never had a church; the family's records are in Brecklum, Germany.

Information from Magnus Söniksen in Brecklum (Borsbüll)

Written from the angle of my grandparents by Ruth M. Struck, May 17, 1984.

Carsten aka Carson Thompson was an expert gardener.  Sometimes the farmer would dismiss him because he thought he was charging too much but would always hire him back because his work was the best.

(There was an older grandmother who lived with him.  She had stiff knees.  The blacksmith broke them at one time hoping to help her but to no avail.  She "birthed" her children standing up.)

Notes for DOROTHEA 'DOLLY' DETHLEFSEN:

She was an efficient person but domineering, nosey, bossy and mean.

Children of CHRISTIAN THOMSEN and DOROTHEA DETHLEFSEN are:

Notes for MARIE ANDRESEN:

Marie's mother was from what was a fairly well-to-do Danish farm family.  She received several cattle and other things as a dowry.  The Andresen she married was well liked, evidently could read and write.  He was a black smith and a drunkard.  He went through her dowry in a hurry and the family was simply destitute.  When grandma was born there was no garment for her.  She was wrapped in her father's leather jacket until the neighbor could come to the rescue.  (from Ruth M. Struck)

Grandma had a brother who was a deaf-mute although he could say to his mother "Motter, du dumme".

They both had rickets from malnuturition and couldn't walk as children but grandma sure could walk almost to her last days!  (from Ruth M. Struck)  Handwritten pages of information included in sources.

Grandma Marie's little box which she kept on her dresser was made by Martin Christiansen, whom she helped bring up.  It is said to be made of cigar boxes.  Shekept letters, photographs and her peppermint candy in it.  *Jutta Thompson has this box today (2008).  Martin Christiansen was the son of one of Grandpa's sisters, I don't know her name.  She was said to be a beautiful weaver.  She became pregnant and married Christiansen who was evidently responsible.  She died in childbirth and Great-Grandma Thompson and Grandm brought up the boy.

At the funeral, the minister kept saying, "She was a great sinner."  Afterwards Great Grandma "told him off".

On settling in Mason City, the Thompson Children attended Central School which is still standing.  It is a grey stone building.  The principal was Carrie Chapman Catt, who later became famous as a leader in the cause of Rights for Women.

There is a copy of Christian's vaccination document included.  The story is that every male child in Germany had to be vaccinated at the age of 8.  That way the government would have a record of all young males, so that, when they reached the age for conscription, they could be located and inducted into the armed forces for military training.

Christian Thompson came to America at the age of 9.  Christian was in training camp a short time for the Spanish-American War.  He was sent home when he became ill.

Perry Thompson takes His Own Live, Saturday

Young Afton Man Drives to Mason City Where the Unfortunate Tragedy Took Place

The people of this community were shocked last Saturday evening when word was received of the tragic act of Perry Thompson, 38, near Mason City.  He left Afton Saturday morning to go to Des Moines to look after some business matters.  About three miles south of Mason City, he turned from the main highway, driving about a half mile east on a little used road, stopped the car, got out, and walked to the side of the road where he shot himself.  The car was near a farm home and the farmer saw him stop, take a blanket from the car and walk to the side of the road, wrap the blanket around him and lay down.  Almost immediately, he heard a shot and rushed out there.  Seeing that he was beyond help he went back and called the sheriff, T. R. Phalen.  The circumstances plainly indicated suicide and no inquest was held.

Relatives here were notified and Charles Coen left immediately for Mason City to bring the body.  He was accompanied by Gordon and Walter Thompson and Robert Coen.

It is hard to understand the reason for this rash act.  It is known that he had been worrying the past few months, but no one realized that it was that serious.  He had been operating the Royal Rose service station on highway 169 just south of the square and had a good business.  His friends in this community were legion and all are grieved over the unfortunate tragedy.  He was a lover of sports, especially baseball and enjoyed playing very much.  Always square in his dealings, he had the confidence and respect of everyone.  His family have the sympathy of the entire community.  Following is a short sketch of his life:

Perry William, son of Chris and Dora Thompson, was born October 16, 1899, at Dows, in Wright County, Iowa and died April 9, 1938, aged 38 years, 5 months and 23 days.  For the past few years Perry has made his home with his parents here in Afton where he has been in charge of the Royal Rose service station.

He leaves to mourn his passing the parents, three brothers, Gordon and Walter of Afton, and Leonard of Creston, two sisters, Mrs. Clara Altaffer of Red Oak and Mrs. Edna Rabon of Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Two sisters preceded him in death.

He was a member of the I.O.O.F., and has many friends in the community who regret his passing.

Funeral services were held at two o'clock Monday afternoon at the M.E. Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Frank Moore, and Interment in Greenlawn cemetery.

Among those here from a distance to attend the funeral services were:  Mr. and Mrs. Paul Thompson and son Martin of Lansing, Minnesota; Mrs. Ervin Wolf and Mrs. Fred Wolf of Austin, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Martin Thompson and son Paul and Mrs. William Brakel of Mason City, Iowa; John Hinrichsen of Green, Iowa; William Witt of Nora Springs, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Casperson and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Caspersen of Rockwell, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Altaffer of Red Oak, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Rabon of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

                                       Card of Thanks

We want to express our sincere thanks to the friends and neighbors for their many kind acts and comforting words in our recent bereavement.  We want to especially thank the members of the Odd Fellow Lodge, the singers and those who sent beautiful flowers.  Your kindness will ever be remembered.

Notes for RICHARD THOMPSON:

        A memoir from Karen:

Richard, my grandpa, was a very special person in my life.  He died when I was only 6 years old, I was just getting ready to go into first grade.  He was one person in my life that made me feel loved and worthwhile, even at the young age I was.  I remember going with him when he went to get the cows for their evening milking.  We walked and walked.  At times he would sit down on a log to talk to me and he said to rest.  On one of these walks, he saw a Granddaddy Long Legs spider.  He picked it and let it run from one of his hands to the other....I was fascinated with this.  The whole time he was talking to me about the spider.  He said if I was ever lost and am alone, to look around for one of these Granddaddy Long Legs, it could not be any other kind.  He said to hold it like he was, then let it down and it would lead me home.  Oh, how I love that memory.

Other times, he would load me up in his wagon and take me for a ride with him to get water.  They did not have a well for water on their farm and had to drive to another farm to get water.  When we got there, the water had to be pulled up with a bucket, no pumps there.  He always worried if I was getting cold in the wintertime.  I don't remember being cold, only his concern for my welfare.

Grandpa insisted on being the one to take me to the beauty salon for the first time for a permanent.  He wanted to do it before I started school.  One day, Grandpa and Grandma picked me up, took me to Grand Rapids to get my permanent.  I cried because the curlers were too tight and pulled my hair, and the dryers were too hot.  Grandpa kept reassuring me that it wouldn't take long and I would be prettier than before.  When it was all done, he took me shopping because I had to have a new hat for my new hairdo.

I lost Grandpa that summer shortly after that day when he died from a heart attack.

Last rites for Richard Thompson, reside of Jacobson for the past 33 years, were held last Wednesday, July 28 from the Ball Bluff church with the Rev. S. A. Erling officiating.

Notes for DOYLE RICHARD THOMPSON:

Doyle never married.  When his youngest sister, Connie, was a teenager, he would bring her, her friend, Betty Essen, and nieces, Karen and Carmen to dances, movies, tv recording shows where they danced, skating, etc.

He lived out his final years at Leisure Hills Nursing Home in Grand Rapids, Itasca County, Minnesota.

I, Karen, went to visit him while he was at the nursing home.  I had taken my two daughters to see him.  He did not recognize me at all.  Later I told Carmen that Uncle Doyle did not recognize me, she didn't believe it so we planned a visit together.  This time I took my youngest son, Erick with me and Carmen took her youngest daughter, Amy.  Uncle Doyle greeted Carmen and Amy immediately but he pushed me away when I tried to give him a hug.  Then Carmen agreed with me that he did not recognize me.  Then Amy started looking in his chest of drawers and I said, "Amy stay out of there or Auntie Karen is going to spank you."  Then Uncle Doyle started to cry and started yelling, "Yes, yes, yes" and reached for me.  Finally he knew who I was.  I went to see him a few times after that and he always remembered me from then on.

Ens. Leonard Thompson Writes from No. Africa

Former Afton Boyl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Thompson Writes of Conditions

Following is a letter received by Mr. and Mrs. Chris Thompson from their son Ensign Leonard L. Thompson, who is in the navy, somewhere in North Africa:

        October 6, 1943

        Dear Mother and Dad:

We are at present all set up in small Igglo huts with rounded tops.  They are real new and we are the first to live in this one.  There are ten of us here--the ten of us that came over together.  Guess we will remain here until we can obtain transportation to our destination.

The country around here is somewhat like that around where we were at San Diego.  Small mountains, lots of rocks and red soil.  It's very dusty here at present but they say the rainy season is due soon and that the mud gets ankle deep.

We went down town yesterday to get some stamps, etc. from the Army and Navy Commissarys, and the town is a mess.  Lots of Arabs and native French.  Some of the French business people look and dress very much like the people at home.  It would help some if I could talk French.

All our mail is censored now of course, and little can be said.

I'm sending some of the money we use.  It is five francs and in our money is worth about 10 cents.  One franc equals two cents.  It's a bit hard to keep straight at first especially in larger numbers.  The larger amounts are real large, even larger than our old bills used to in the U.S.

It's quite warm here in the daytime but you nearly freeze at night as the air is real damp.

The Arabs here are really a sight.  They drive a single little burrow and small two-wheeled carts.  Most of them haul large jugs filled with water which they take into town and sell for a few francs.  Some of them have dirty white robes and beards.  The women mostly wear white robes and those that are strict believers cover their entire face with only a small hole to peek out of.  The say that is so no one can see their face except their husbands.  Those that don't cover their face should, I believe, at least they would look better.

That is all for this time,

                Love,

                Leonard

        October 13, 1943

At last I have finally reached my ship and feel much better since I know where I'm going to be and all is fixed up.

I got here by driving a stolen "jeep" back here where it was stolen from.

I t was a wonderful trip, through the mountains of North Africa.  I took my time and enjoyed every bit of it.  Wouldn't take a lot for that trip and truthfully our own western country doesn't have much on what I saw.  Everything is primitive yet and I saw what we used to see in pictures and read about.  These natives really give you a good laugh lots of times.  Our army and navy boys have taught them lots of bad words and of course some are very funny, but they don't know what they are saying.

I should like to tell you where I am but of course that is against the rules.

Suppose it is getting a little chilly at home by this time, isn't it?  It's nice and warm where I am but gets chilly at night.

How did the world series come out?  I heard part of one game.

        Love, Leonard

30.  CRYSTAL ANNA5 THOMPSON (RICHARD4, PAUL CHRISTIAN3 THOMSEN, PETER CHRISTIAN2, CHRISTIAN 'CARSTEN'1) was born 14 Dec 1921 in Jacobson, Aitkin County, Minnesota46, and died 06 Aug 1993 in Rush City, Chisago County, Minnesota46.  She married LEONARD MELVIN SR LINDMAN 26 Dec 1941 in Grand Rapids, Itasca County, Minnesota, son of FRED LINDMAN and MINNIE WALLIN.  He was born 11 Sep 1921 in Jacobson, Aitkin County, Minnesota, and died 03 Dec 1997 in Cambridge, Isanti County, Minnesota.

Notes for CRYSTAL ANNA THOMPSON:

The following are memories from Karen, Crystal's oldest child:

Crystal was born and grew up in northern Minnesota in the Jacobson area.  She attended Cornish School.  Crystal and Leonard lived for a few years in Hill City, MN before moving to Rush City, MN. in 1967.  They opened their home to foster boys while raising their own family.

Crystal always had a large garden and she made good use of the produce taken from it.  Peas, beans, corn, and pickles were canned each year.  The older girls had to clean at least one row in the garden each day before they were free for the day to play or swim.  The girls also had to help with the work around the house.  Our water was carried from a pump outside in the yard.  On laundry day, the girls carried the water.  When laundry was finished, the wash water had to be carried out and Crystal wanted it put on her rose bushes and peonies.  She said it kept the worms and bugs away.

Every spring, when all the plants, grass, trees and everything came to life, things started happening with our family activities for the summer.  As soon as the dandelions and pig weeds started to grow, we picked them for eating.  When the tender dandelion leaves were too large and tough for eating, we picked the blossoms by the bucket so Mom could make wine.  Springtime also meant tapping the maple trees and gathering the sap for maple syrup.  It took many gallons of sap to make the syrup but it was so good.

When berries became ripe in late summer, the entire family would pack up early in the morning and did not return home until evening.  They would work late into the night sometimes cleaning the berries so Crystal would be prepared for canning them the next day.  They picked strawberries, blueberries, currants, raspberries, chokecherries, pincherries, high bush cranberries and blackberries.  Not one of the children ever asked what they were going to get paid nor did they ever refuse to help.  It was all a part of being 'family'.  Jams and jellies were made from the juice as well as a quarts of syrup.  Many, many quarts of jellies, jams, sauce, juice and syrup were put away when the berries were available.

I remember one day in the 1950s when a Barn Owl got into our chicken pen.  Mom told Dad about it and he shot it.  He brought it in the house in a box and set the box on Mom's wringer washing machine.  He called the taxidermist in Grand Rapids cause he wanted it mounted.  But Dad had to work the next day so he talked Mom into taking it to Grand Rapids for him.  Mom did not have a driver's license and doing something like this, scared her...she was always afraid of getting picked up.  The next morning, Mom got up first and went into the kitchen to get breakfast for Dad.  The owl was sitting on the top of her wringer washer.  It was not dead!!  Dad hit it in the head with something, put it in the box again and placed the box in the trunk of the car.  When we got to the taxidermy, Mom went in and asked him to get the owl out of the trunk.  She was not taking any chances of it being alive and the taxidermist didn't think it would be either.  But when the taxidermist opened the trunk, the owl was sitting up looking at him.  What a memorable experience!  When Dad got that owl back, us girls used to tease all the kids that came to visit that it was really alive.  There was one family that used to come to stay overnight and they had mostly boys.  Dad or Mom had to remove the owl from the living room where they slept because we had scared them of it.

Mom was a bit superstitious!  Dad used to tease her a lot about it.  She had him pick up a wedding gift on his way home from work one day.  He picked up knives.  She was so upset, she cried and said she could not give knives for a wedding present because it would bring bad luck to the couple.  Then someone told her to put a new penny on each knife and it would be okay so that is what she did.  If she saw any of us step over a broom, we had to step back over it and pick it up.  Some days, we would spend lots of time looking for a four-leaf clover because she wanted one and she would always help us look.  Black cats, Mom didn't like black cats at all.....especially if we saw one on the road.

Mom made a quilt for each one of her children before she died and for most of her grandchildren.  I seldom use the quilt she made me....but I do on special occasions, such as reunions and sometimes at Christmas.  It is beautiful and I treasure having it.

My memories of living on the farm, the Lindman Homestead, are good.  We didn't have a lot of toys and things like that but we were creative and enjoyed ourselves.  A creek ran through our place and us girls and the neighbor kids would come over and we would spend a lot of time in the creek.

We made up games when a tree would fall down in the pasture and would play on the tree until all the branches were gone.  The 'puffballs' that were prevalent in the cow pastures were used as contests...just to see who could find the most and smash them to see the cloud of dust come from them.  It was on this farm too that tragedy was to strike:  the house fire that trapped two of the girls and they burned to death.  The home caught on fire from a spark from the wood stove when it went up the chimney.  Built up creosote in the chimney is what fueled the fire.    After the fire, Leonard could not imagine ever wanting to live back on the home place and sold it.  After the grieving pased, he tried to buy it back but the new owners refused.  Both Mom and Dad were heart broken.  Mom was in the hospital 2 weeks because of a near nervous breakdown and she had a miscarriage that night.  Dad was in the hospital 2 weeks because he was burned to the bone in his hands and feet trying to get the girls out.  The baby, Diane, went to St. Paul to stay with Aunt Bernice and the rest of us stayed with Grandma Thompson until Mom and Dad got home.

Mom was afraid of water.  She was terrified every time we went down to the lake to swim.  I think she got a bit used to it trusting that we would be careful.  Us older girls taught ourselves how to swim when we lived between Big and Little Ball Bluff Lakes.  Living there, it offered us fishing, swimming, skiing, sledding and skating.  Our landlord was a nightmare for our Mom though.  He was always drunk and when Dad was gone, he would come to our house and make passes at her.  She was in tears over it so much of the time.  We lived there six years when we were evicted.  By this time, Dad had had enough and we moved over by the gravel pit on Highway 200.  Mom and Dad fell into very difficult financial times at this time and was forced into bankruptcy.  It took many years after that before life straightened out for them.  In fact, when Dad got the job at Cambridge it was like a miracle for them.

Mom worked at the Cambridge State Hospital in the laundry room until her health couldn't take it any longer.  She had to give it up.

Holidays were always filled with family activities:  Christmas was without question to be spent at Crystal's family farm with lots of food and sledding.  Family's got together at Easter for Easter Egg hunts, Thanksgiving was a day of blessings with family, the 4th of July was spent at a lake with family, at festivals, family visits and fireworks.

We were never a hugging, "I Love You" kind of family until Mom and Dad got into their older years.  Love was never questioned because the physical parts did not exist, and respect and trust for each other was evident and expected.

This is a brief summary of Crystal and the family she deeply loved.  It would take too much space for this part of the history book to go into more detail here.
