Daniel O'Brien Passes Away

After Several Weeks in Hospital

 

Daniel O'Brien, 78, died at the Eastern Maine General Hospital, Tuesday night as the result of injuries received when he was struck and knocked down, Sept. 20, at the junction of Main and Thatcher streets by a car driven by Lowell D. Condon of Millinocket.

Mr. O'Brien was waiting for a street car at the time and darted out in the path of the approaching Condon car, witnesses stated.  No blame was placed on the driver.  Sargt. Calvin Kneide of the traffic squad, investigated the accident.

Although born in Perry, Maine, Mr. O'Brien has lived in Bangor practically all his life.  He was known as a kindly, genial man and had many friends and acquaintances.

Surviving are three sons, Daniel J., Jeremiah M. and Clarence T., all of Bangor, two daughters, Mrs. Duncan McDonald of Bangor and Mrs. Gertrude Furri of Boston and two brothers, Thomas and Jeremiah of Minneapolis.

The body was taken to the home of Mrs. McDonald, 811 Main Street.

The death of Patrick O'Brien, long a well known employee of the Maine Central Railroad occurred on Sunday after a long illness at his home, 89 First Street.  He was 64 years of age.  Mr. O'Brien was of estimable character, possessed of many friends and beloved by all who knew him.  His passing will be greatly missed.  Surviving besides his wife are two daughters:  Mrs. Mary J. Knaide,  Mrs. L. H. O'Rouke; two sons, Charles of Manchester. New Hampshire, and John J. O'Brien of Holyoke, Mass., also three brothers, Thomas and Daniel of Bangor and Jeremiah of Aitkin, Minnesota.  Funeral to be announced.

 

O'Brien Funeral Service was held in St. Mary's Church.  There was a large attendance of friends and relatives and many beautiful floral tributes.  The pall bearers were six nephews:  John O'Brien, Clarence O'Brien, Michael O'Brien, Thomas O'Brien,  Louis Crowley and Leonard Hachey.  Interment was in the family lot in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Mr. & Mrs. Thomas A. O'Brien of Second Street celebrated their golden wedding anniversary yesterday at the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Earle L. Pooler of Sanford Street.

Mr. & Mrs. O'Brien, the former Ellen Hurley, were born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, but have lived in Bangor since their younger years.

On August 8, 1894, they were married in St. John's Catholic church by Father Malone.

Mr. O'Brien was employed by the Maine Central Railroad for 25 years, and by the Eastern Corporation for another 20 years, retiring in 1931.  He was a former member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Mr. & Mrs. O'Brien are the parents of four children:  Michael O'Brien of Bangor; Mrs. Earle Pooler, also of Bangor,  Mrs. Carl Olson of Everett, Mass. and Thomas J., O'Brien of Watertown, Mass., and the grandparents of six children.

Mr. & Mrs. O'Brien received many remembrances on their 50th anniversary from friends and relatives.

Both Margaret and her husband, Samuel were killed in a car accident when they were hit head on by another vehicle on a hill near Swatara.

 

        Funeral services were held at the St. James Catholic Church in Swatara for Samuel and Margaret Bailey (nee O'Brien) who were killed in an automobile accident Tuesday evening, August 13, 1963 on County Road 29, later known as Osprey Avenue.  Officiating at the service was Father John Doyle.  Rosary was recited at the Sorensen-Root Funeral Home Thursday evening.  Sorensen-Root Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.  Pallbearers for Margaret Bailey were:  John O'Brien, Dennis O'Brien, Richard O'Brien, Eugene O'Brien, Pat O'Brien, and Donald Graton.  Pallbearers for Samuel Bailey were:  Edgar McNeil, Donald McNeil, John Bailey, Dallas Marsh, Charles O'Brien and Thomas Bailey.

 

        Following Samuel and Margaret's marriage, they made their home in the Swatara and Shovel Lake area until moving to Swatara in 1954.  They were members of the St. James Catholic Church in Swatara, where Mrs. Bailey was also a member of the Altar Society.
