Moise LaVallee (Moses LaValla)

This is the original spelling of the name (refer to the letter received from Yvon Leger from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.)  According to the Historical Research Center of Deerfield Beach, Florida, LaVallee originated from the country of France, LaValla originated from the country of Italy, and LaValley originated from the countries of England and France.  Findings in America of Moise, it is sometimes spelled Mose and sometimes Moses.

Moses was born to Moses and Adeline Lafavre in Hungerford, Canada. (Hungerford being a township of Hastings County in Ontario, Canada, which the city of Belleville is located.)  Provinces of Canada are divided into districts and sub-districts, somewhat like our states and counties here in the United States.  There was a Moses LaValla, born in Canada, to parents also born in Canada, arrived in Minnesota in 1880, was a farmer, and was married.  No date of birth or age was given.  He died in McLeod County, Hale Township on December 31, 1885.  Cause of death was listed only as "gravel."  No place of burial was given.  This was recorded in McLeod County at Glencoe, Minnesota in Book A, page 149, line 14.  Would it be possible this could be Moses' father?  At this writing (November, 1999) research is continuing.

When Moses applied for citizenship, the date of his birth was written as May 1, 1858.  This might have been written in error, as the June 1900 Minnesota Census shows his age as 43; the April 1910 Minnesota Census shows his age as 52; and the January 1920 Minnesota Census shows his age as 62, so all of these indicate his year of birth as 1857.

Moses emigrated to Winsted, Minnesota in McLeod County from Canada.  There he met Josephine Rivers, daughter of Joseph and Martha Rivers and in May 1883, they traveled to Glencoe, Minnesota to get married.  They farmed in McLeod County for a year, possibly with Josephine's parents, 5 miles east of Silver Lake in Hale Township, as this is where Joe, their first child was born.

In 1884 or 1885, they moved to Wright County, Woodland Township, near Waverly, Minnesota, rented land there and continued farming.  During these years in Woodland Township, there were 8 children born, 6 boys and 2 girls.

In October of 1902, the family moved to Benton County, Maywood Township, near Foley, Minnesota.  He again rented land and farmed.  The 1910 Minnesota Census shows he was renting a house and was working as a laborer at the Heading SawMill.  He also worked many side jobs, as "The Foley Independent" newspaper reports during those years, to support his family.  Between the years 1904 and 1909, there were 4 children born, 3 boys and 1 girl, now totaling 13 children.

Land had opened up for homesteading in Northern Minnesota in 1898.  Homestead land was given free of charge to citizens who were willing to build a dwelling and clear a certain number of acres of trees and brush to make it productive for farming.  No taxes were required for a number of years in return for the improvements being made.

Moses applied for citizenship in 1912, the same year he applied for the homestead and was granted 160 acres (this amount according to the size of his family) near Williams, Minnesota, so when the improvements were completed, he would be a citizen and he would be the owner of those 160 acres.  Citizens were allowed 5 years to make the necessary improvements.

He moved his family from Foley, Minnesota to 2 miles north of Williams, Minnesota in the early spring of 1912 and with help from his sons, built a home, cleared part of the land immediately and began farming.  He made good his promises as the 1920 Minnesota Census shows; he did indeed own this land.

Everyone worked hard during those early pioneer days; with no modern conveniences as we know them today, trying to grub out a living for their families and Moses was no exception.  He went into town only for needed supplies and to attend church.

Moses must have been an adventurous man willing to meet new challenges and always looking forward to what would be best for his family.  He was a well-liked man, taught his children to work hard, to enjoy life, and to have fun during their lifetime as he did in his.

Moses' obituary states he had four sisters.  Marriage records were found at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Waverly, Minnesota for Margarita and Peter Joseph Dolbec listing Margarita's parents as Moses and Adeline Lafavre, Moses' children spoke of an Aunt Mag so it is a strong possibility she was a sister.  Baptism records are also recorded there for Margarita and Peter's two children, Flora and Josephine.

Newspaper clippings from "The Foley Independent" newspaper at Foley, Minnesota state Joe Berry was visiting his brother-in-law, Moses LaValla, so Joe must have been married to Moses' sister; however her first name has not been found.

Moses had a brother, Josephus, who was an attendant at his wedding.  There was a Joseph LaValle, born in July 1847, listed on the 1900 Minnesota Census, along with a daughter, Estella, born in Minnesota in June 1887, who was attending school.  They were boarding with a Joseph Depre.  Joseph was farming and at the time had been married 19 years, but no name was given for his wife.  This is a possible lind to Moses' brother.  Family members never heard from Joseph after the early 1900's so perhaps he moved to another state or returned to Canada.  No other records, other than those enclosed, were found for his sisters either.  However, we are still reseaching that area.

Moses died in McDougald Township, near Williams, Minnesota of diabetes, mellitus, and carburculosis on October 10, 1921, as recorded in Book D, page 317, line 21 in Beltrami County at Bemidji, Minnesota.  He is buried at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery at Williams, Minnesota.

Death Certificate #: 1956-Mn-008265

The following obituary shows Moses birth date as May 4, 1856 versus May 1, 1857?

                                                                MOSES LAVALLA

Moses LaValla was born May 4th, 1856 and died October 10th, 1921, at the age of 65 years and 5 months.  His death was due to a complication of diseases of short duration.  Although he had been in slightly poor health for nearly a year it was not considered serious until a little over a week ago, when the doctors gave up all hopes for his recovery, but having always been a well and strong man he did not give up the fight until last Sunday, when he realized he was being called from his mission here to brighter shores beyond.

Mr. LaValla married Miss Josephine Rivers on May 28th, 1883, to which union thirteen children were born.  In 1912 he moved here with his family from Foley, Minnesota, having filed on a homestead here in June of that year, and where he has since lived, and with the help of his boys developed a fine farm.

He was loved and respected by all who knew him and his death is a souce of deep regret of the entire community.   He was a true love of home and a devoted husband and father, and his cheerful disposition will be missed by the bereaved ones.

Deceased leaves to mourn his loss, a wife and nine children, namely: Oliver LaValla, of Foreston, MN; Emil LaValla, of Baudette; Mrs. St. Peter, of St. Paul; Mrs. Ed Lennox, of Williams, and Johnnie, Joseph, Fabian, Raymond and Walter of this place, four sisters and 22 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in the Catholic church Wednesday forenoon and interment made in the Catholic cemetery.

                                                A precious one from us has gone;

                                                A voice we loved is stilled;

A place is vacant in our home,

                                                Which never can be filled.

God in his wisdom has recalled

A soul his love had given,

And though his body slumbers here,

His soul is safe in heaven.

GILMAN

The Bumshall Lumber company have a loss to pay owing to an accident which happened a few days ago.  Mose Lavallie was top loading for the Bumshall Co., and in some manner made a French dive for a log that was turning a cannon.  He accidently slipped and cut his throat with the canthook.  Falling from the top of the load he hit the canthook on top of the swamphook and split the stock.  Mr. Lavallie landed on a sump and sustained a serious wound.  Mr. Bumshall says he would not mind the loss of Lavallie, but he feels sore about the hook.

John LaValla's Fjord caught fire during the dance at Neumiller's last Sunday night, and it caused a lot of excitement for a time.  The fire started when Lawrence LaValla took the top off the gas tank and struck a match to look at his gas supply.  Lawrence's trouser's caught fire, and were pulled off by bystanders.  His leg was badly though not seriously burned.  The loss of the front seat cushions was the only damage to the car.

                                                                                JOHN LAVALLA

John was born on December 20, 1891 to Moses and Josephine (Rivers) LaValla in Marysville Township in Wright County near Waverly, Minnesota.

At the age of 10, he moved with his family to Maywood Township in Benton County, near Foley, Minnesota.  He moved to Williams in the spring of 1912.  There he met Georgiana Palmer Belanger and they were married in Baudette, Minnesota on September 12, 1912 with his brother Emil and Bernadette Beauchamp as witnesses.  They farmed north of Williams and together they reared nine children.

As each child grew up and on their own, many traveled to Portland, Oregon, searching for work and then settled in that area.  When John retired from farming in the early 1950's this is where he wanted to spend his remaining years, so moved to Portland also.  His failing heart restricted much activity, but he enjoyed returning to Williams each summer to visit his relatives and friends.  He looked forward each Friday night to playing "Whist" with Clete, Larry, Bud, Norman, and Ivan.  This was his weekly night out with the "boys".  His daily walks would take him around the block near his home with the neighborhood kids following and calling him 'Grandpa.'

John's daughter, Vange, has a pleasant memory of her Mom and Dad, and these are her own words.

"Mom had a dress with a drop waist skirt and pleated all around.  They loved to dance the polka.  One night at the Night Hawk* they were dancing and pretty soon everyone was dancing around the edge and they were left the whole middle of the floor.  I can still see her skirt whirling around.  I was so proud of them."

*The Night Hawk was a dance hall, 6 miles west of Williams, at Roosevelt, Minnesota, where people gathered on Saturday nights for dancing.

Once when John had his horses hitched to the wagon driving them to the field, he sneezed, his false teeth fell out of his mouth right in front of the wagon wheel and before he could stop the horses, the wheel ran over them and broke them.  That meant teasing from the brothers for a long time.

John passed away on April 14, 1969 and is buried at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery at Portland, Oregon.  While visiting their son, Clifford, in New York City in 1970, Georgie became ill and was diagnosed with lung cancer.  She passed away on May 12, 1971 and is buried next to her husband.

John and Georgie's daughter, Luvern and her husband Norman Namie are also buried next to John and Georgie at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery at Portland, Oregon.

I remember one incident that took place when he was making whiskey.  His still was about a half mile or so back in the woods near our house.  My cousin, Louis LaValla, and I were with my Dad and Uncle Johnny, watching the still.  (Louis LaValla is a son of John's).  Dad and Uncle Johnny were going home to get something to eat.  Louis and I were told to watch the still.  When the glass got full we were to change it and cap the full glass.  We did this and eventually we got bored with it, I guess, and started to play "knife" on a log.  As luck would have it, we forgot about the glass.  About this time Dad and Uncle Johnny came back, the glass was running over, and Louis and I were still playing "knife."  Dad was really upset, of course, and I took off down the trail for home and he was right behind me, booting me in the butt with every step I took.  We finally got home and I got a new butt chewed for me, plus a licking that I will not forget.

Dad was a good man and a good father; we were never short of food; there wasn't a lot on the table but we got by.  It's too bad he died so young in life.  Most of the family (children) didn't really know him well, but I do know that we all loved him and he loved us.

Emil died at the hospital at International Falls, Minnesota after a 10 day illness on April 29, 1931, at the age of 36.  He is buried at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery at Williams, Minnesota.

                                                FABIAN DAVID LAVALLA

Written by Walter and Josie LaValla 1999 and Fabian's daughter, Lois Boomgaarden

Fabian David LaValla was born in Wright County, Woodland Township, near Waverly, Minnesota on July 11, 1896 to Moses and Josephine (Rivers) LaValla. (Recorded in Wright County Courthouse, Buffalo, Minnesota, Book 3, Page 274, Line 34).  As a child the family moved to Benton County, Maywood Township near Foley, Minnesota.  The June 1910 Census shows he was 13 years of age and working as a picker at the sawmill.  In 1913 he moved with his family to McDougal Township, Beltrami County, north of Williams, Minnesota.

Fabian met Mae McGuire at her sister Ellen's house; (Ellen was married to Fabian's brother, Raymond LaValla.)  Fabian began courting Mae and while the couple was sitting in a buggy, Mae accepted Fabian's proposal of marriage, and on November 3, 1923 were married.  His brother, Emil and wife, Grace, were the attendants, and a wedding dance was held at his brother Johnny and wife, Georgie's home.

Fabian worked at the sawmill in Spooner (now East Baudette), Minnesota.  The first winter, the mill closed down and he went to work for the National Pole Co.  He was paid $90.00 per month.  Rent was $10.00 and lights $1.50 per month.  Coffee was 25 cents a pound, boiling beef 5 cents a pound, and good Canadian bacon 25 cents a pound.

In 1925 Fabian bought his first car from his brother, Walter, with payments of $28.00 per month.

In 1927, the National Pole Co. closed and the family moved from Spooner to Williams, Minnesota.  They lived in a small shack until a log home could be built on the ridge 2 miles North of Williams, Minnesota on Fabians' parents property.   Fabian drove school bus until 1931.

In the spring of 1931, he rented 80 acres of land, 6 1/2 miles northeast of Williams from Albert Dyrdahl, on shares becoming a farmer and built a log home.  He had some machinery and a team of horses.  He began raising cows, pigs, and chickens for meat, milk and eggs.

Fabian and Mae purchased the 80 acres in 1941, building a frame house (still standing today), replacing the log home.  A square dance was held with Fred Zerk the caller and all the neighbors attending.

All farming was done with horses until funds became available to buy a tractor.  Leonard Benzing, a neighbor, would come with his threshing machine to harvest the grains.  Neighbors always helped neighbors and the work would get done.

Fabian and Mae raised a family of 12 children (8 girls and 4 boys).  Fabian died on December 13, 1963 of heart failure and is buried at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery at Williams, Minnesota.  Mae passed away on May 9th, 1993 and is buried next to her husband at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Williams, Minnesota.

                                                                AS I REMEMBER DADDY TELLING------------------

as told by Alfred, Vernon and Carol LaValla

The year was 1912, and Daddy's sister, Viola had passed away.  The family was making the move up north, from Staples, MN., leaving the livery stable which had provided for the family.  They were on their way to Williams, Minnesota, where they would build a house and get settled in the new area.  Daddy remembers traveling with his mother , Josephine by train from Staples, Minnesota, the trip taking one week to get to Warroad, Minnesota.  The family was moving from the Foley area for the free land.  Moses, as Daddy said, came from Canada with his brother.  The two went to Foley and Moses never heard from his brother again.

Daddy met Mum at the hotel in Williams, Minnesota where she worked.  On June 23, 1921 the two were married and they set up housekeeping at the Berkstrom place about 2 1/2 miles north of Williams, and about 2 1/2 miles NW on the ridge line.

Later Daddy built a house on the ridge behind the house that we grew up in.  Daddy did some farming, and had milk cows.  In later years he worked for the W.P.A. (Workers Program of America), where he helped build the school in Williams, Minnesota.  During the summers he worked for the forestry department.  He also was a mechanic at Bards garage in Williams.

I remember Mum and Daddy along with Uncle Johnnie, going out west to visit relatives, I think, and us kids were left in the care of Uncle Walter and Aunt Elsie.  Alfred, along with Alvin, ran up on top of the barn to hide from Aunt Elsie.  Whatever trouble we had caused, Daddy would tan our hides when he got home for the problems we had caused Aunt Elsie.

About 1932, Daddy and Mum moved from the farm to the Bill Releen place because it had a barn and a place to raise animals, moving back to the homestead in 1933.

Mum says when Grandpa Moses died the sheets came up off the bed.  Mum threw salt over her left shoulder for good luck whenever she was cooking, and that was all the time it seemed.  She was good about seeing a ghost or two, too.

13.  WALTER ELMER SR.3 LAVALLA (MOSES2, MOSES1) was born 05 Mar 1904 in Maywood Township, Benton County, Foley, Minnesota, and died 17 May 1976 in Hastings, Minnesota.  He married ELSIE ZERK 20 Jun 1925 in Baudette, MN.  She was born 17 Jan 1896, and died 22 May 1984 in Hastings, Minnesota.

Notes for WALTER ELMER SR. LAVALLA:

                                                                                WALTER ELMER LAVALLA

Walter Elmer LaValla was born in Benton County, in Maywood township, near Foley, Minnesota on March 5, 1904 to Moses and Josephine LaValla.  (Recorded in the Benton County Courthouse at Foley, Minnesota.  Book D, Page 47)

As a young boy, he moved from Foley with his parents to McDougald township, two miles north of Williams, Minnesota.

Walter met Elsie Zerk who was a cook at Ed and Effie Lennox' cafe in Williams.  They were married at Baudette, Minnesota by Father Bossus on June 20, 1925.  Witnesses for the event were Emil and Grace LaValla, Walter's brother and his wife.  Records for this marriage are recorded at the Lake of the Woods Courthouse in Baudette, Minnesota.  Book 1, Page 88.

He worked at the Maloney lumber camp south of Williams for a period of time.  Elsie cooked for the men at the camp and their living quarters were in the cook shack.  During this time, the cook shack burned down and all their personal belongings were lost in the fire.

They moved to International Falls, Minnesota in 1928 or 1929 and Walter worked in the paper mill.

About 1931 the family moved into a log home two miles north of Williams near his mother and began farming.  During this time he also worked for Bill Adriance on his farm.

By August 1936, their four boys were born: the flu epidemic erupted and Jack passed away in October from the flu.  Raymond also was very sick for many days.

In 1942 the family moved onto the Zerk farm, adjacent to the family farm and farmed the entire 240 acres with a herd of 10 cows, some pigs, chickens, and horses.  The cows were milked morning and night by hand; the cream separated and sold to the creamery in Williams.

In 1944 he sold all but 2 cows, his chickens, pigs and horses.  He began working for Albert Dyrdahl, an International Harvester dealer, who sold farm machinery and dealt with logging and lumber.  During this summer he only grew feed for his livestock.

In the fall of 1946, he sold his livestock, bought a home in Williams and continued working for Albert Dyrdahl.  He moved his mother back to live near him in town.

In 1948 he sold his home in Williams and the family moved 1 1/2 miles east of Williams where he farmed 80 acres 2 miles north of Williams, purchasing 40 acres from his mother.  During this time he bought a threshing machine to do custom threshing.

In 1949 or 1950 he built a two bedroom home on the 80 acres north of Williams, continued farming and also worked for the forestry south of Williams, clearing brush and building roads.  Livestock consisted of only a few pigs, chickens and 2 milk cows to provide them with eggs, milk and meat.  In the winter he worked in the woods south of Williams cutting pulp.

In 1955 his mother moved next to her son Fabian on his farm northeast of Williams and Walter and Elsie moved to Hastings, Minnesota.  Upon Walter's arrival in Hastings, Walter got a job working at the Smead Manufacturing Co. until his retirement in 1966.  Soon after, help was needed for night watchman at the Smead Manufacturing Co. so he worked part time until 1975.

                                                                                WALTER LAVALLA TIDBITS

                                                                    written by Walter (Junior) LaValla.....1999

When he was a teenager, it is unclear if he bought or won a revolver, but one day he decided to do some target practicing with his new revolver.  He put it into his hip pocket and when he removed the revolver for a fast draw, it went off and he air-conditioned his pocked with 2 bullet holes.  Needless to say, he sold his revolver and he never owned another one during his entire life!!

One summer during haying season, the hay was being put into the hay loft with a mechanical hay fork.  Walter was standing on the hay rack operating the hay fork which had been pushed down into the hay.  He pulled the lever which locked the hay into the fork.  He remained standing on the hay rack to release the lever when the hay reached the hay loft.  When ready, he said to Junior, "Take it away," and Junior began pulling the hay load up with the tractor.  The hay, hay rack, and Walter started up toward the hay loft.  He yelled at Junior___"STOP--STOP--STOP that damn thing!"  Over the sound of the tractor, Junior didn't understand at first what he was saying and before he could stop the tractor, the hay load, rack and Walter were halfway up to the hay loft.  Unknown to them, Walter had pushed the hay fork too far, catching the floor boards of the hay rack.  Junior reversed the tractor letting the hay load, hay rack and Walter down easy, all the while hiding his face so his Dad wouldn't see him laughing!!

One Christmas season Walter's brother, Johnny, had butchered a pig.  Two of Johnny's daughters, Leone and Vange, cut the pigtail off, wrapped it in paper put it in a box, Christmas wrapped it with a tag clearly stating, "Do Not Open Before Christmas," and mailed it to their Uncle Walter.  Everyone knew when Walter received a package in the mail or was given a package, curiosity always got the best of him and he needed to know immediately what was in the package; there was no waiting.  When he opened the package and found the pigtail he was quite upset.  He said, "It's not legal for anyone to send something like this through the mail and whe I find out who did it, I'll have them arrested."  Later Johnny told him who pulled the joke and few words were spoken with Leone, Vange or Johnny for a long time, until Walter simmered down and got over the prank that was pulled on him.

Walter was a happy-go-lucky man; enjoyed playing whist, having company, visiting with people, loved playing and being with his grandchildren and just plain enjoyed life.

He became ill in early 1976, underwent gall bladder surgery from which he did not recover and passed away on May 17, 1976.  Walter and Elsie are both buried in St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Cemetery at Hastings, Minnesota.

The following article is written by Annie "Cookie" Lieberman, Granddaughter of Oliver and Josephine.  June 2000

MEMORIES OF MY GRANDPA, OLIVER LAVALLA

When I think of my grandparents, I think love, comfort, and caring.  My grandfather, Oliver LaValley, was a big man in every way to me.  Grandpa would sing, "There was a little girl, with a little curl right in the middle of her forehead.  When she was good, she was very, very good.  When she was bad, she was horrid."  Then he would laugh and hug me while we rocked in his big old wooden rocking chair.  Grandpa had many pet names for me; Little Bird, Pigeon, Girly, and Cookie, because I loved cookies.  I was told I said "cookie" before anything else.  To this day my nickname is 'Cookie.'  I was born at their house in International Falls, Minnesota on 8th Street.  Maybe that's why we were always so close.

Grandpa would sit in his rocker and rock.  There were two cats that laid on the floor behind the rocker.  As he rocked, the cats would switch their tails from one side to the other.  One at a time the tail went under the chairs' rocker.  He would stop once in a while to get in time with the cats so as not to rock on either ones tail.  There were only oil lamps and light that came through the openings of the heating stove.  As a child, it was great fun to watch all this in very little light.

I remember him cleaning the rain barrel so the water would be clean.  We used that water for rinsing our hair.  I also remember him going off to work carrying his lunch box and wearing his coveralls.

Grandpa married my grandmother, Josephine Stern in 1908 at Foley, Minnesota.  About 1927, they moved to International Falls, Minnesota.  After the depression, President Roosevelt had started the Work Projects Administration (W.P.A.) to cope with the unemployment problem presented by the depression.  Some of these jobs were to either construct or improve public places such as parks, public buildings, roads, bridges, sewers, water lines, landing fields for aircraft, etc.  Many young men went to work for the W.P.A.  Camps were set up for housing in the area of designated work and the men would stay at these camps until the work was finished.  Oliver worked with this group in the late 1930's.  He also worked at a stable as he loved to work with horses.

Grandpa and Grandma lived for a brief time in 1940 in Rainer, Minnesota.  In 1941, shortly after the birth of Carol Ann Jackson (pictured with my Grandpa,) Grandpa, Grandma, Uncle Jerry, Aunt Dolly, Carol Ann, Leo Polus, my mother, and myself left for Detroit, Michigan hoping to find work.  My Grandpa found a job as watchman for Hupmobile Motor Company.

For a while we all lived together in one house.  Later Aunt Dolly, Uncle Honey and Carol Ann moved to a small upper apartment on East Grand Boulevard.  We moved to a house on Medberry Street that had a sleeping room with cooking.  Leo Polus, (my stepfather), and my mother lived upstairs, but I mostly slept downstairs with Grandpa and Grandma.

Uncle Carley and Aunt Rachel came to Detroit to try to find work.  This was late in her pregnancy and they went back to Minnesota to be near her family for the birth.  Shortly after, Leo Polus joined the Navy.  I stayed with Grandpa and Grandma.  Uncle Ed and Aunt Hildegard came to visit for the 4th of July of 1943.

My Grandpa wasn't well.  His ankle would swell real big.  He would always drink baking soda and water when he wasn't feeling good.

The morning he died, I remember he had gotten up, put on a white shirt and was trying to put his pants on.  He was sitting on a wooden kitchen chair in the bedroom.  He was put in bed where he stayed until the doctor came and pronounced him dead.  I don't remember when he was taken away from the house but I do remember Aunt Dolly or Grandma telling me to touch him and he wouldn't hurt me.  I felt I had lost my caregiver.  I loved him very much.

He was taken by train to Williams, Minnesota with Grandma and Uncle Jerry accompanying the body.  He was laid out at his mother's, Josephine LaValla's home, for the wake and he is buried at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery at Williams, Minnesota.  My Grandma, Josephine, is buried at International Falls, Minnesota.

My mother died in 1963 and when the social security money came for her burial, I used it to purchase a marker for my dear Grandfather.

I don't think everyone really saw the true him, but with me, as a little person, he did show himself as his true self.  These are the most precious memories I have of my Grandfather.  I will always remember him as kind, gentle, joyful, loving, and a truly good person.
