The funeral services of Mrs. J. H. Bailey of Shovel Lake, were held here yesterday in the Church of St. James.  Mrs. Bailey, formerly Mary Ann Lavalee, an old resident of Shovel Lake, died Wednesday of cerebral hemorrhage.  She is survived by her husband, J.H. Bailey, eight sons, Robert, William, James, George, Tom, Samuel, Alvin, and John Albert, who is in the naval service in France; and by five daughters, Mrs. C.R. Marsh, Mrs. Mabel Wernig, Ruth Bailey and Hazel Bailey and grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held at the St. James Catholic Church in Swatara for Samuel and Margaret Bailey of Swatara who were killed in an automobile accident Tuesday evening, August 13, 1963 on County Road 29.  Officiating at the service was Father John Doyle.  Rosary was recited at the Sorensen-Root Funeral Home Thursday evening.  Sorensen-Root Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.  Pallbearers for Margaret Bailey were: John O'Brien, Dennis O'Brien, Richard O'Brien, Eugene O'Brien, Pat O'Brien, and Donald Graton.  Pallbearers for Samuel Bailey were:  Edgar McNeil, Donald McNeil, John Bailey, Dallas Marsh, Charles O'Brien and Thomas Bailey.

 

Samuel came to McGregor with his parents in 1902, and later moved with them to Swatara.  After Samuel and Margaret O'Brien were married, they made their home in the Swatara and Shovel Lake area until moving to Swatara in 1954.  They were members of the St. James Catholic Church in Swatara, where Mrs. Bailey was also a member of the Altar Society.  Samuel was a former member of the Aitkin Farm Bureau.

Jim and Delpha were foster parents of many children. 

They adopted Gaylan James (Johnson) McNeil born June 30, 1967.  He lived with the McNeil's from the time he was about 3 years old and was adopted when he was a junior in high school. Gaylan was a Native American Ojibwe.  He graduated in 1986 from Remer High School.

 Jeremy James was adopted approximately in 1989-90.  He graduated from Remer High School in 2003.  At this time, (2005) he continues to reside with the McNeils.  He is employed at OCD in Grand Rapids 3 days a week.

Brandon Stangel and his sister, Tiffany Lorraine Stangel were adopted approximately in 1990.  Jim and Delpha contacted all three of their natural children and asked them what they thought of adopting these 2 children.  They said it was the best thing that could happen with these 2 children and they saw no other way and gave their blessings.  Tiffany graduated from the Eagle Country Christian Academy in Remer, MN.

After graduation, she attended Hibbing Beauty Academy and is now a hairdresser at Cost Cutters in Grand Rapids, MN.  She loves to experiment with anyones hair if she is allowed.  She is married to Richard Kingsley and they live in the Shovel Lake area.  They were married in September 14, 2002 by Shovel Lake.

Employment:  He worked as a diesel mechanic, worked in construction as a welder and carpenter, logged, farmed and is now (1993-   ) working at Blandin Paper Company (Kymmene) in Grand Rapids, Itasca County, Minnesota.  He says it is a good 'retirement' job. 

 

Interests:  Off-roading, gardening, and hunting.  And, of course, he is well known for his out-spokenness and having NO TACT.  One of Ray's favorite quotes are: "If he/she is mad, they have 2 choices:  One, they can get over it or: Two, they can stay mad FOREVER.  And it doesn't matter to me which one they choose."

 

Medical:  In July, 1997, he was in Unity Hospital in Fridley for 6 days when his Right leg had a blood clot.  Aprotein in his blood is higher than normal causing his blood to have a higher clotting level.  He is on aspirin therapy to help this condition.  He has osteoarthritis.
